An interactive Middlebury College Writing Class

Throughout history, but increasingly in the age of global technology, writers have sought to identify and define themselves in relation to any number of communities through the act of writing.

  • What kinds of considerations do they face in performing such a task?
  • What kinds of purposes, ranging from the personal to the political, do their writings serve?

We will consider these questions in setting out to illustrate and define, in writing and via other mediums, both our own identities and our responses to the concerns of others.

The course will include readings by writers such as Dorothy Allison, Julia Alvarez, Alice Walker, Suheir Hammad, bell hooks, Peggy McIntosh, Jamaica Kincaid, Richard Rodriguez, Joy Harjo, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Barbara Ehrenreich, Adrienne Rich, David Leavitt, Luis Rodriguez, and others.

Our work as a class will occur in various realms. We will:

  • engage in traditional classroom discussions and writing workshops, as well as pursue online discussions
  • bring in outside writers and scholars to discuss their writing and research, review community events, and do fieldwork (research) in our community
  • publish a collaborative online zine
  • create and present two major independent projects
  • write short academic critiques
  • amass a great deal of informal writing, including reflections on our writing and research process

Students are expected to show strong initiative and to assume a great deal of responsibility for pursuing their independent research and written work. Class members are also expected to contribute to the class community as a whole through constant dialogue about ideas, research, and writing.
