a. Definition of VLL
- traditional audio lab moved to the digital medium
- coexists with a physical lab space: mixed environment model
b. Why move to a VLL?
- accessibility and space issues
- advantages of digital media over analog (non-linear, backup, distribution)
- barriers of time and space broken down
- access anywhere,anytime: student centered
c. Implications for the physical lab?
- traditional lab = servers in basement, frees up lab space to take on a new role
- away from service oriented, audio-based lab to a true lang. resource center
d. Frees up personnel to work on meaningful tasks
- students: learn valuable skills
- lab directors: changing role, more computer-savvy: need to know about tech, what's out there; chance to look forward and lead
